The habit of reading books

« To acquire the habit of reading is to construct for yourself a refuge from almost all the miseries of life.»
― W. Somerset Maugham.

Many people hate books, and hate reading in general, the universal reason they give, is that they don’t have time for it, but in fact it’s all about laziness and the lack of volition.

It is very often that I meet people who really want to acquire that habit, but, they just find it difficult and a tedious chore. Do you belong to this category ?

Well, great ! I got a solution to your issue, reading is really not hard. Instead, see it as a wonderful thing. Reading is a joy, it is a time of peace, of adventure, of exploration, of just enjoying a good story, you just need to give it a try, pick up the closest book with fewer pages or a review you have, open it make sure not to choose intricate articles, pick out the ones you feel comfortable with, an interesting topic with an easy language so that you can enjoy, force yourself to continue reading for 15 minutes as a first attempt. Keep practicing everyday 15 min more until you end up reading at least 1 hour per day.

If you’re serious about creating the habit of reading, what’s important is finding a time you can read every single day, find a place that’s comfortable, be sure to shut off distractions such as the TV, Internet, phones, radio, music… Let reading be a quiet time.

As a proper example, I used to dislike reading, I wasn't born with that habit nor grown up with it, my parents never supported me to read, I always thought it was tiring to grip a book, with eyes fixed on it for hours.
Three years ago, I started noticing that my English was fading, I had no way to turn to, but the BOOKS, the first book I read entitled : Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen the classic version, read the first page, I felt annoyed, but said ‘‘that’s fine I’ll carry on reading’’, I finished the first page, the surprise was : I enjoyed the first part and started looking forward to know more about the story. It took me centuries to finish the book honestly, as I was too slow at reading. I decided to re-read it, I chose Level intermediate B1 version (that was my level ) I enjoyed even more.

Days later, I started looking for more books to discover, I loved those moments where I dive into a story and the way I was travelling across the time and the different places I never been to, I loved and still love to lose myself in the world of a novel, to become best friends with a character, to curl up in the silence of the early morning or late night hours, wrapped in the deliciousness of a book. I lived several lives thanks to the books.
Lately, I become addicted to books, they become my inspiration and my ultimate companions, I’m never alone when I have a book in hand.
The picture you see on the left side is mine, a close friend of mine took it secretly during a trip of 450 Km we had together, there were many other friends that day, but haha !! As you may see, I couldn't give up on my beloved habit.

Trust me, lot of things will change in your life when you read, your vision to things, your mood and character, it enhances your language skills as well.
You see ! Reading is not that hard at all, it only needs one step forward, provide an environment that fosters reading and GO for it ☺!!
